England beat Pakistan by 44 runs on the Duckworth/Lewis method to win the rain-marred first one-day international at Southampton on Wednesday.

Victory saw England take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

England, set 261 for victory, finished on 194 for three in 34.3 overs before rain, which had twice stopped play previously, halted the day/night match for a third and final time at 9:37 pm local time (2037 GMT).

Man-of-the-match Jason Roy (65) and Joe Root (61) laid the platform for a successful chase with a second-wicket stand of 89 in 14 overs.

Pakistan, who won the toss, were held to a total of 260 for six in their full 50 overs.

Azhar Ali, the Pakistan captain, top-scored for his side with 82 and Sarfraz Ahmed made 55.

The series continues at Lord’s on Saturday.

Brief scores

Pakistan 260-6, 50 overs (Azhar Ali 82, Sarfraz Ahmed 55)

England 194-3, 34.3 overs (J Roy 65, J Root 61)

Result: England won by 44 runs (D/L method)

Man-of-the-match: Jason Roy (ENG)
