England team director Rob Key has announced an internal investigation. The probe will examine media reports that players engaged in excessive drinking during a scheduled break in the ongoing Ashes series against Australia.
The controversy follows England’s eight-wicket defeats in the first two Tests in Perth and Brisbane. The team then took a break in Noosa, a holiday destination.
Subsequently, British and Australian media reported that players were drinking heavily throughout their stay. This prompted a response from team management. In a BBC interview, Key addressed the headlines directly. He cautioned that some reports may be exaggerated but affirmed the need for scrutiny.

“Headlines can be misleading at times… Stories of players drinking six days solid – that’s unacceptable,” Key stated. “We’ll be looking into seeing what the facts are.”
He clarified his stance on team culture, saying, “I don’t agree with a drinking culture. I don’t like a drinking culture.” Key had previously warned the squad before the series to avoid “stupid things.”

Australian coach Andrew McDonald was asked about his team’s post-victory celebrations. He expressed confidence his players would be ready for the next Test, stating, “They’re all adults… They know how they need to get ready.”
The fourth Test of the series is scheduled to begin on Friday in Melbourne. England will aim to salvage pride in the remaining matches amid the off-field scrutiny.
