Defending US Open champion Coco Gauff exited in Round 16, ensuring a new titleholder this year. Emma Navarro, surprising many, now advances to compete in her hometown.
In a challenging match, Gauff struggled to overcome Navarro, her previous Wimbledon conqueror. Navarro expressed her sentiments post-match, stating, “This is my birth city. It feels special to play here. Coco is an incredible player, and I respect her greatly. I know she’ll claim this title again.”
Despite her efforts, Gauff, ranked third globally, lost in three sets: 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. Navarro had previously bested Gauff at Wimbledon and, requiring an extra set this time secured her spot in the quarterfinals.
This marks Navarro’s debut in the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam in her country, following three victories this season against top-10 WTA players. Reflecting on her journey, Navarro commented, “It’s surreal. After the first round exits in the past two years, reaching the quarterfinals here is incredible. Playing in my hometown adds to the special feeling. I have immense respect for Coco and believe in her comeback.”
