A video capturing Elon Musk’s distinctive arm gesture during a speech at a Donald Trump rally has sparked widespread debate online, with some viewers comparing it to a Nazi salute. The footage quickly went viral, intensifying discussions about the intent behind Musk’s actions.

During his address, Musk, a noted ally of Trump, declared, “This was no ordinary victory. This was a fork in the road of human civilization.” He punctuated his sentiment by placing his right hand over his heart, then extending his arm outward at an upward angle, with his palm down and fingers together. He repeated this gesture towards the crowd behind him, stating, “My heart goes out to you. It is thanks to you that the future of civilization is assured.”

However, Musk swiftly countered the allegations of the gesture being a Nazi salute. On his social media platform, X, he remarked, “Frankly, they need better dirty tricks. The ‘everyone is Hitler’ attack is sooo tired.”

DO NOT BELIEVE THE MEDIA

The media is misleading you. Elon Musk never did a Nazi salute. Watch the full video: He simply gestured and said, “Thank you, my heart goes out to you.” pic.twitter.com/e3vBaLoVqx

Historians weighed in with mixed perspectives. Ruth Ben-Ghiat labelled it “a Nazi salute—and a very belligerent one too.” Claire Aubin, a historian specializing in Nazism within the US, agreed, calling it a “sieg heil.”

Yet, not everyone concurred with these assessments. The Anti-Defamation League (ADL), an organization founded to combat anti-Semitism and which has previously criticized Musk, defended him, suggesting, “It seems that Elon Musk made an awkward gesture in a moment of enthusiasm, not a Nazi salute.” Historian Aaron Astor also supported Musk, emphasizing that despite his criticisms of Musk for allowing harmful content on his platform, he did not believe the gesture was a Nazi salute.

Frankly, they need better dirty tricks.

A user supported Elon Musk by highlighting his recent trips to Auschwitz and Israel, where he deepened his understanding of the Holocaust and Jewish history. They argued that calling Musk a Nazi is misleading, emphasizing that his actions were thoughtless rather than deliberately harmful.

Additionally, the discussion broadened to include images of former US President Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, who ran against Trump in 2016, making similar gestures. These examples demonstrate that such motions can be subject to various interpretations.

This is a delicate moment. It’s a new day and yet so many are on edge. Our politics are inflamed, and social media only adds to the anxiety.

It seems that @elonmusk made an awkward gesture in a moment of enthusiasm, not a Nazi salute, but again, we appreciate that people are on…

This controversy emerged as Musk has supported the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), an anti-immigration party that German security services have labelled as right-wing extremists. This support comes ahead of a national election, adding complexity to the scrutiny of Musk’s actions and intentions by the public and the media.
