Amid allegations from renowned American writer Walter Isaacson concerning SpaceX CEO Elon Musk’s refusal to aid Kyiv in an attack on the Russian naval base in Sevastopol, the celebrated entrepreneur has openly asserted his allegiance solely to the United States.
Musk emphasized that he is not duty-bound to advocate for Ukraine, given his non-Ukrainian citizenship. Expressing his standpoint via a post on the platform now known as X Monday, Musk professed his unwavering loyalty to the US, avowing his readiness to safeguard his nation, even at the cost of his own life.
The international community showed discontent following Musk’s denial to permit access to the Starlink satellite network, fearing that such assistance against Russia might catalyze a nuclear escalation.
Musk articulated his sentiments on X Monday: “My allegiance is only to the USA. Regardless of the events, my dedication remains to stand by and potentially sacrifice for America.”
The Underlying Concerns Behind Musk’s Decision
Delving deeper, Musk highlighted that in a scenario where the US government has not officially announced warfare against Russia, deeming him a traitor would ironically represent an act of betrayal. He urged critics to communicate this perspective unequivocally.
Walter Isaacson, who previously penned Musk’s biography, queried about the tech magnate’s role in the Russia-Ukraine crisis. Musk clarified that the initial objective behind Starlink was to facilitate leisure and educational online access rather than being a tool in wartime operations.
In his discussion with Isaacson, Musk expressed his apprehensions that Ukrainian advances on Russian assets could potentially ignite a nuclear confrontation initiated by the Kremlin.
Starlink, encompassing a network of over 4,000 satellites offering connectivity to more than 50 nations, has facilitated essential communications on the Ukrainian battlefield.
According to Isaacson’s book, Musk conveyed his fears regarding Ukraine’s aggressive tactics, which he perceived as an invitation to strategic defeat.
Musk elaborated that a successful Ukrainian operation against the Russian fleet might have escalated the conflict to alarming levels, likening the potential aftermath to the repercussions of a “mini Pearl Harbor”.
Musk Faces Backlash for His Remarks
The SpaceX leader also addressed speculations surrounding an urgent plea from Ukraine to activate Starlink services in Sevastopol, a region hosting the Russian naval forces. Musk rejected the claims, affirming that the services were never active in those locales.
In a reaction to Isaacson’s book excerpts going public, Dmitry Medvedev, the Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of Russia, commended Musk as apparently being the “last rational mind in North America”.
However, Musk’s remarks have not been without controversy. Previously, he had attracted criticism for proposing the official recognition of Crimea as a Russian territory and suggesting a referendum in regions under Russian control to decide their national allegiance.
Moreover, a senior advisor to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Mikhail Podoliak, accused Musk of facilitating evil through his actions, arguing that Musk’s refusal to interfere enabled the Russian fleet to launch missile attacks on Ukrainian cities. Podoliak lambasted Musk for seemingly defending individuals involved in wartime atrocities and questioned the moral implications of Musk’s stance.
