Elon Musk is intensifying efforts to position X, formerly Twitter, as a rival to YouTube. Earlier this year, he invited MrBeast, a top YouTube influencer, to start sharing complete videos on X. X CEO Linda Yaccarino supports this move, stating the platform is transitioning to prioritize video content.
Recently, X introduced a smart TV app, marking a crucial step towards this goal. Musk announced the beta release of “X TV”.
This initial version is available on Google Play, Amazon’s app store, and LG’s app store, with pending releases for Apple TV and the Apple App Store for tvOS.
The app enables users to explore and watch videos posted on X, including live-streamed content. Signing into an X account is necessary for access. Before this app, I viewed X videos on a TV, which required smartphone casting.
Musk’s vision for X includes turning it into a comprehensive “everything” app, expanding beyond video sharing. Currently, X users tend to watch videos while browsing their feeds. The impact of the new TV app on user viewing behaviours remains uncertain.
