On Wednesday, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz officially launched Lahore’s much-anticipated electric bus transport system, marking a significant step towards the province’s vision of a Green Punjab.
During the inauguration ceremony, Maryam Nawaz emphasized that the project was a key milestone in fulfilling the dream of a greener, more sustainable Punjab. She revealed that 27 electric buses have been deployed to offer an eco-friendly and affordable transportation alternative for the public.
The government has set the fare at Rs. 20 to make these buses accessible to many citizens, aiming to provide a cost-effective and safe travel option.
In a move to ensure inclusivity, Maryam Nawaz announced that senior citizens, students, and differently abled persons will be able to travel for free on electric buses. These passengers can use an electric bus card to avail of the free services. Additionally, the buses will offer free Wi-Fi and charging facilities to enhance the travel experience for all passengers.
Looking ahead, the Chief Minister shared exciting developments for the future of Punjab’s public transport. She revealed that 500 more electric buses will be introduced in Lahore by August, further expanding the network.
Maryam Nawaz also announced that the Metrobus service will be extended to Faisalabad and Gujranwala by the next financial year, continuing the government’s commitment to improving transportation infrastructure across the province.
In addition to the electric bus initiative, the Chief Minister reiterated her previous announcement of providing 100,000 modern electric bikes to students, supporting eco-friendly transportation options for young people.
