The Election Commission of Pakistan has officially recognized the unopposed party elections for the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Awami National Party (ANP) while withholding recognition for the elections held by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
Nawaz Sharif has been affirmed as the unopposed President of PML-N, a decision endorsed by the Election Commission, which included his name in the updated party president list. Similarly, the commission has accepted the elections of Jamaat-e-Islami.
In contrast, the Commission has not yet decided on PTI’s intra-party elections, leaving the chairman’s position of PTI in limbo and withholding the electoral symbol typically granted for party identification.
Journalist Fahim Akhtar raised concerns about the Election Commission’s apparent selective scrutiny of PTI. He noted the Commission’s quick acknowledgement of ANP’s intra-party elections, where all 128 officials were chosen unopposed. He questioned the apparent PTI focus by the Election Commission and Chief Justice Faiz Isa.
This controversy escalated as the February 8 elections approached. PTI was stripped of its electoral symbol, while ANP was afforded time and an electoral symbol without conducting its elections. Chief Justice Qazi Faiz Isa has endorsed the Commission’s decisions, effectively leaving PTI to contest under various symbols, creating a significant challenge for the party.
