The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has firmly negated any prospects of postponing the upcoming elections, confirming that the election schedule will be promptly announced upon completion of the delimitation process. “There is no chance of a delay in the elections,” affirmed an ECP spokesperson, assuring that preparations are already in place for the electoral process.
Detailing the stages, the official highlighted that the initial phase of delimitation is already complete. The subsequent phase, involving the resolution of any objections to preliminary delimitations, is underway. The ECP has set specific dates, October 30-31, to begin hearings on these objections, aiming for a finalized list by November 30. The spokesperson emphasized the clarity in the Commission’s resolutions, promising a transparent election schedule following the constituency publications.
Political Landscape Amid Election Preparations
This definitive stance from the ECP counters prevailing speculations stirred by President Dr. Arif Alvi’s recent comments questioning a January electoral timeline. However, his call for transparent polls aligns with the ECP’s commitment. Analysts’ speculations about potential delays, referencing a lack of active campaigning and unfavourable winter conditions, add to the current political conjecture, particularly after the abrupt end of Imran Khan’s administration in April 2022.
The interim coalition government, established post-Khan’s exit, initiated the dissolution of the National Assembly in August, triggering a constitutional mandate for the ECP to conduct elections within 90 days, technically by November 6. Nevertheless, the necessity for fresh delimitations post-census approval by the Council of Common Interest (CCI) extended this timeframe.
Towards Political Stability: Parties and ECP in Unison
Major political factions, including the PTI and PPP, have consistently pressed for expedited elections to dissipate the ongoing national uncertainty. The scenario stabilised in September when the ECP committed to a late January polling timeline, further solidified by releasing a provisional delimitation report. This step marked significant progress towards the eagerly anticipated general elections, offering a beacon of political steadiness in turbulent times.
