Released on May 30, 2025, ‘Elden Ring: Nightreign’ is FromSoftware’s most ambitious experiment, combining the challenging combat of Soulslike games with a fast-paced, cooperative roguelike format. Set in the ever-changing Limveld, this standalone spin-off offers an engaging multiplayer experience. Still, it faces challenges as a solo adventure, making it a divisive addition to the ‘Elden Ring’ universe.
Players take on the role of Nightfarers, choosing from eight pre-built characters such as Wylder, a balanced fighter, or Recluse, a spellcaster. They aim to survive three-day Expeditions and defeat the Nightlords, giant bosses like Gladius. The game features Limveld’s Night’s Tide, a shrinking map mechanic similar to those found in battle royale games, which adds a sense of urgency and culminates each day in intense boss fights.

As players scavenge for weapons, talismans, and Relics either earned through Expeditions or purchased at the Roundtable Hold, they can enjoy high customisation for their builds, despite fixed character stats. After about 20 hours of gameplay, the roguelike loop of looting, levelling up, and battling remains engaging. However, solo play can feel punishing due to the high density of enemies and the unadjusted difficulty of the Nightlords.
Limveld’s Dynamic World
Due to the impact of The Shattering, Limveld changes Shifting Earth events, such as the frost zone at The Mountaintop, which provides Frostbite immunity necessary to defeat Nightlord Caligo. These randomised alterations in terrain and enemy placements help maintain variety in gameplay, addressing earlier worries about repetitive maps. However, including recycled Dark Souls bosses, such as Gaping Dragon, feels outmoded and poses a risk of excessive fan service.

Strengths and Weaknesses
Nightreign’s Nightlords, from Gladius’ impressive swordplay to the unblemished final boss, are some of FromSoftware’s most spectacular creations, outshining the grandeur of Shadow of the Erdtree. The synergistic Nightfarer abilities encourage teamwork, but solo players may find it frustrating, with some describing the single-player mode as an “afterthought.” Additionally, technical issues, such as occasional connection drops and awkward platforming, detract from the overall experience.
Gaming analyst Dr. Lisa Tran from UCLA notes, “Nightreign’s co-op focus innovates Soulslike design, but its niche appeal may alienate traditional fans.”
Elden Ring: Nightreign redefines FromSoftware’s formula, offering a thrilling co-op adventure for $39.99 on PC, PS4/5, and Xbox. Although it may not appeal to solo players, its depth and spectacle make it a standout title in 2025.
