Pakistan’s Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) announced that Pakistan will likely celebrate Eidul Al Azha, the Islamic festival marking the culmination of Hajj, on June 7, 2025.
Suparco’s prediction is based on scientific analysis and astronomical data for the Zilhaj 1446 AH crescent moon sighting, offering early guidance for communities preparing for this significant holiday.
Suparco’s analysis indicates the new moon for Zilhaj will appear on May 27, 2025, at 8:02 PM PST. On that date, corresponding to 29 Ziqa’ad, the moon will reach an age of about 11 hours and 34 minutes at sunset, with a mere 37-minute window before moonset. Suparco noted, “Even with ideal weather, the crescent’s visibility across Pakistan remains highly unlikely due to this short interval.” Consequently, Suparco expects 1st Zilhaj to start on May 29, setting Eidul Azha for June 7.
The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee has the final authority to confirm the moon’s sighting. It relies on eyewitness accounts and weather conditions, which may alter the official date.
Why Eidul Al Azha Matters
Eidul Azha, observed on the 10th of Zilhaj, honors Prophet Ibrahim’s devotion to God and aligns with the Hajj pilgrimage, a core pillar of Islam. Pakistanis celebrate with communal prayers, animal sacrifices, and sharing meat with family and the needy, promoting unity and generosity. As a major public holiday, the festival brings vibrant festivities and deep religious observance nationwide.
Suparco, Pakistan’s national space agency, aids the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee by providing precise astronomical forecasts for Islamic calendar events. Its scientific approach complements traditional moon-sighting methods, helping communities plan religious observances like Eidul Azha. While Suparco’s predictions guide preparations, the committee’s decision based on physical sightings remains definitive.
With Eidul Al Azha projected for June 7, Pakistani families can begin organising sacrifices, gatherings, and charitable acts. Suparco’s forecast provides a reliable starting point, pending the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee’s confirmation.
