Global pop icon Dua Lipa captivated her Mumbai audience on Saturday, delivering a riveting performance. A highlight of the show was her unexpected mashup of her chart-topper “Levitating” with “Woh Ladki Jo” from the 1999 Bollywood film “Baadshah,” featuring Shah Rukh Khan. This fusion, previously popular on TikTok, quickly went viral on social media.
While the audience celebrated this cross-cultural mix, playback singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya voiced his displeasure. The Hindustan Times reported his frustration about being overlooked in the excitement over the mashup.
Bhattacharya shared on Instagram Stories, endorsing fans’ posts that called for recognition of the original artists. One post highlighted, “The song’s success owes to legends like Abhijeet and Anu Malik.” His son, Jay, criticized the media’s actor-centric coverage: “We live in a country where the media and public overlook singers.”
His post added, “This isn’t about Shah Rukh Khan—I’m his biggest fan. It’s about our failure to support our singers as they do in the West.”
Despite Bhattacharya’s concerns, many fans praised the mashup. Comments ranged from “Dua Lipa nailed the meme Levitating x Woh Ladki” to wishes that Shah Rukh Khan had been present.
The performance was described as “iconic” and “goddess vibes” by other fans.
The event also attracted Bollywood celebrities. Suhana Khan, Shah Rukh’s daughter, shared her enthusiasm by posting a video on Instagram Stories. Notables like Radhika Merchant, Anand Piramal, and actor Ranvir Shorey were among the attendees.
Lipa’s admiration for Shah Rukh Khan was evident during her 2019 visit to India, where they met—a moment Shah Rukh shared on Instagram.
