The Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif chatted informally with media personnel and insisted that drone attacks were a violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty.
Speaking to media personnel after President Mamnoon Hussain’s address to the joint session of the parliament, General Raheel said that drone attacks violated Pakistan’s sovereignty.
He also said that there was no option of failing in the war against terrorism. Reportedly, General Raheel also said that he had also said it in the past that the current year would be the last for terrorism in Pakistan.
The army chief also said that everyday the first file he saw on his table was the one pertaining to IDPs.
“Terrorists would not be allowed to go back to cleared areas again,” said Sharif. “I have given assurance to the people of FATA that terrorists would not return.
“The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor will be completed at all cost,” he added.
General Raheel also said that development work was being carried out quickly in South Waziristan as well as North Waziristan.
An American drone strike on May 21 killed Taliban chief Mullah Akhtar Mansour. Pakistan had reacted strongly to the news and condemnations of the strike came from PM Nawaz Sharif, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar and from Gen. Raheel Sharif as well.
General Raheel had also protested over the drone strike in a meeting with the United States Ambassador to Pakistan, David Hale.
