Tottenham Hotspur defender Djed Spence became the first Muslim to earn a senior cap for England. The journey of Djed Spence in England’s national football team is truly groundbreaking. Indeed, Djed Spence’s story in England continues to inspire many.

The 25-year-old came off the bench in the 69th minute during a 5-0 World Cup qualifying win in Belgrade. “I was surprised to be the first,” Spence said. “It’s a blessing and I hope it inspires young kids worldwide.” Supporting Djed Spence within England’s squad could influence many aspiring players.

Spence’s debut means a lot to British Muslims, who represent 6% of the UK population but have little representation in professional football. Ebadur Rahman, founder of Nujum Sports, which supports over 400 Muslim athletes, called it “a moment of celebration.” He added, “Djed is a role model, breaking barriers for Muslims globally.” For many, Djed Spence representing England provides hope for the inclusion of diverse talents.

Yunus Lunat, a grassroots coach, told the BBC, “It’s not great that it took until 2025 for a Muslim to play for England. We need more opportunities and role models for young players, just like Spence’s role as an icon among the Muslim community in England.”

His England call-up marks a major milestone, underscoring the significance of Djed Spence’s presence in England’s national team. “The journey hasn’t been easy,” Spence said. “I’m emotional but over the moon to be an England player.”
