The Gaza Strip has been engulfed in violence, with Palestinian health officials reporting over 25,000 deaths due to Israeli strikes since the outbreak of war in October. In the last 24 hours, one of the deadliest days of the conflict, 178 Palestinians were killed.
Israeli forces and Hamas fighters have been clashing intensely across various locations in Gaza. Areas like Jabalia in the north and Khan Younis in the south have become the epicentres of recent Israeli operations. Khan Younis experienced heavy bombings, with explosions resonating across the city. Nightfall in the Khan Younis refugee camp brought more airstrikes, resulting in casualties and injuries.
The Palestinian health ministry has reported a staggering number of casualties, including many women and children. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed his deep concern over the “heartbreaking” deaths of Palestinian civilians, criticizing the scale of destruction and civilian deaths. Israel, while asserting its efforts to minimize civilian casualties, accuses Hamas of using civilians as human shields, a claim Hamas denies.
Political Stance and Ongoing Conflict
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected conditions proposed by Hamas for ending the war, including Israel’s complete withdrawal from Gaza. Upcoming talks involving Israeli and Palestinian foreign ministers with the European Union in Brussels will focus on potential steps towards peace. Hamas has criticized the U.S. for its support of Israeli actions, stating their October 7 assault was a defensive measure against Israeli occupation.
The conflict has displaced most of the 2.3 million residents of the Gaza Strip, with widespread destruction making living conditions increasingly difficult. Palestinians report severe shortages of food and necessities, with hospitals and humanitarian agencies struggling to cope.
The conflict has also intensified in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, where the Palestinian Authority maintains limited self-rule. According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, Israeli forces have killed 360 Palestinians in the West Bank since October 7.
