The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government, which publicly upholds the principles of law supremacy and freedom, has faced criticism for not adhering to these standards.
The critique follows the controversial transfer of Rehana Yasmin, the District Education Officer of Mansehra. Yasmin’s transfer was reportedly due to her refusal to reassign a clerk during a polio campaign. The situation came to light following a leaked audio clip that went viral on social media.
In the recording, Kamal Salim Swati, the nephew of Babar Salim Swati and the provincial vice president of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, is heard threatening to transfer Yasmin out of the district unless she changed the duty station of a senior clerk, Babar Khan, who was involved in the polio campaign.
The Elementary and Secondary Education Department of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa responded by formally issuing a notification that transferred Rehana Yasmin, a Grade 19 officer, to report to the Elementary and Secondary Education Department.
The leaked audio captures Kamal Salim Swati instructing Yasmin to replace Babar Khan. When Yasmin refused, Swati warned her to consider finding a new station for herself if she kept Khan in his current role. This incident has sparked discussions on the integrity of governmental operations within the region.
