A powerful car explosion struck central Delhi on Monday evening near the historic Red Fort. The blast killed eight people and injured twenty others. This rare security incident occurred in one of the capital’s most protected zones.
Authorities quickly declared high alerts across major transportation hubs. Security agencies placed train stations in Mumbai, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi under heightened surveillance. Police sealed off the blast area as emergency services rushed victims to hospitals.
Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha described the incident timeline. “A slow-moving vehicle stopped at a red light just before 7 pm,” he told reporters. “An explosion then ripped through the vehicle, damaging several nearby cars and auto-rickshaws.”
Witnesses reported intense blast effects. Local shopkeeper Wali Ur Rehman said the force threw him to the ground. Metro passenger Suman Mishra described seeing flames and panicked crowds fleeing the area.

The Red Fort represents a major national symbol and UNESCO World Heritage site. Prime Ministers traditionally address the nation from its ramparts every Independence Day. The area has remained largely secure despite past attacks targeting other Delhi locations decades ago.
Emergency crews maintained a strong presence throughout the night. Thirty ambulances responded to the scene as firefighters extinguished burning vehicles. Police continue to control access to the cordoned-off blast area.
