DeepSeek has rapidly risen to the pinnacle of the US App Store’s “Top Free Apps” list, surpassing OpenAI’s ChatGPT with its innovative AI chatbot.
Hangzhou-based company has launched the DeepSeek-R1 artificial intelligence (AI) model. This open-source model has outperformed OpenAI’s o1 AI model in several benchmarks, representing a major milestone in AI advancement.
Since its introduction, OpenAI’s ChatGPT app has consistently dominated the App Store rankings since its release in May 2023. Yet, the recent launch of DeepSeek-R1 has shifted this dynamic, drawing considerable attention from the tech community. The model’s efficiency and lower development costs of approximately $6 million, or about Rs. 51.8 crore, are particularly noteworthy compared to other large-scale AI models.
The tech community, including Silicon Valley leaders, has reacted strongly to DeepSeek’s rise. Venture capitalist Marc Andreessen described the R1 AI model as one of the most significant breakthroughs he has witnessed. Similarly, Aravind Srinivas, Co-Founder and CEO of Perplexity AI, praised the Chinese firm for outpacing ChatGPT in the AI app space.
In a LinkedIn post, Yann LeCun, Vice President and Chief AI Scientist at Meta, highlighted the trend of open-source models surpassing proprietary ones. Meanwhile, Holger Zschäpitz, a senior financial reporter, suggested that DeepSeek could pose a significant threat to US equity markets.
In addition to DeepSeek, the Chinese company Kimi AI has garnered attention for its Kimi k1.5 AI model, which offers capabilities that match and even exceed those of GPT-4o and Claude Sonnet 3.5 in various benchmarks. Kimi AI has launched its chatbot for free, allowing unlimited use, and it includes features such as real-time web searches and image comprehension.
