To honour the memory of the Army Public School Peshawar tragedy martyrs, the Deputy Commissioners of Islamabad, Lahore, and Rawalpindi have declared December 16 a public holiday to mark the solemn remembrance of the victims of one of the most heart-wrenching terrorist attacks in Pakistan’s history.
On December 16, all public and private schools and colleges in Islamabad, Lahore, and Rawalpindi will remain closed to observe this day. However, universities in Lahore will continue their normal schedule. The official notification from the Deputy Commissioners has confirmed the closure of educational institutions in these districts.
Background of the Tragedy Army Public School
The date commemorates the tragic day in 2014 when six terrorists attacked the Army Public School in Peshawar, resulting in the loss of about 150 students and teachers. Following this devastating event, the government initiated the National Action Plan (NAP) to eradicate terrorism from the nation.
In a related announcement, the Sindh government has declared December 25 and 26 as public holidays. December 25 will celebrate Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s birthday and serve as a preparatory day for Christian employees to celebrate Christmas. Consequently, all government offices will be closed during these two days, reflecting national respect for Pakistan’s founder and the Christian community’s celebrations.
Bank Closures
Further supporting these observances, the State Bank of Pakistan has announced that all banks will remain closed on December 25. This closure aligns with the national holidays and allows citizens to participate in commemorative and festive activities without concern for banking activities.
