India’s tennis team landed in Pakistan for their first Davis Cup match in 60 years. The much-anticipated World Group-I Playoff tie is set for February 3-4. Both teams conducted training sessions on Monday, marking the beginning of their preparations.
Pakistan’s team, including Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi and Aqeel Khan, trained in the morning. India’s squad, featuring Ramkumar Ramanathan and Yuki Bhambri, followed with an evening session.
Visa Issues and ITF Decision
India’s team captain, Rohit Rajpal, faced a delay in his arrival due to personal reasons. The Pakistan Tennis Federation also revealed that Prajwal Dev’s visa is still being processed.
India had previously requested the International Tennis Federation (ITF) to move the tie to a neutral venue, citing security concerns. However, the ITF declined this request, ensuring India plays in Pakistan for the first time since 1964.
Former Davis Cup player Hameed-ul Haq expressed optimism about the tie’s impact on Pakistani tennis. He acknowledged India’s stronger team on paper but highlighted the potential of Pakistan’s players on grass courts.
