Former Australian Test star Damien Martyn has regained consciousness after emerging from an induced coma, following a serious bout of meningitis. His recovery has drawn widespread relief and praise from the global cricket community.
Martyn, 54, fell critically ill late last month and doctors rushed him to the hospital, where specialists diagnosed meningitis, a life-threatening inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Medical teams placed him in an induced coma as part of his treatment.
On Sunday, former teammate Adam Gilchrist described Martyn’s progress as remarkable.
“It has been an unbelievable turnaround in the last 48 hours,” Gilchrist said. “He can now talk and respond to treatment. His recovery feels nothing short of a miracle for his family.”

Doctors plan to move Martyn out of intensive care at Gold Coast University Hospital as his condition continues to improve.
Messages of support poured in from across the cricketing world during Martyn’s illness. Former England captain Michael Vaughan, Indian greats Ravichandran Ashwin and VVS Laxman, and ex-Pakistan captain Mohammad Yousaf all shared messages of encouragement.
“As a fellow cricketer, my thoughts and prayers are with you,” Yousaf wrote on X, wishing Martyn strength and a full recovery.

Martyn represented Australia in 67 Test matches and 208 one-day internationals between 1992 and 2006. Renowned for his elegant stroke play, he scored 13 Test centuries and finished with a Test batting average of 46.37.
He also played a pivotal role in Australia’s 2003 World Cup triumph, scoring an unbeaten 88 in the final against India in a match-winning partnership with Ricky Ponting.
Martyn retired during the 2006 Ashes series and has largely stayed out of the public spotlight since. His recent health scare has once again united the cricketing world in support of one of Australia’s most respected batters.
