The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) reported that Cyclone Shakti has escalated into a severe cyclonic storm in the Arabian Sea. Located 390 kilometres south-southwest of Karachi, the storm poses risks to coastal areas. The PMD’s Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre issued its seventh alert, urging vigilance.
The PMD predicts Shakti will move west-southwest for the next 24 hours, then shift east-northeast, gradually weakening. Coastal Sindh districts, including Badin, Thatta, Sujawal, and Jamshoro, are expected to experience light to moderate rain with thunder. Karachi may also see rainfall. Strong winds could disrupt coastal activities.

The PMD advises fishermen to avoid deep-sea ventures until October 5 to protect lives and property. Coastal residents, especially in Karachi, should prepare for rain and gusts. Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has warned of intermittent rainfall nationwide over the next 12 hours. It recommends avoiding travel in mountainous areas due to the risk of landslides.
The NDMA encourages using the Pak NDMA Disaster Alert app, radio, or TV for updates. Following local authorities’ guidance is crucial for safety.
Cyclone Shakti threatens disruptions in Sindh, a key economic region in Pakistan. Timely precautions can minimise damage. The NDMA’s alerts highlight proactive disaster management amid Pakistan’s vulnerability to climate-driven events.
