The Punjab Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) has arrested Amin-ul-Haq, a close associate of Al-Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) CTD Usman Akram Gondal, during a news conference in Lahore, confirmed that Amin al-Haq, a key figure within Al-Qaeda, was apprehended yesterday who is on the terrorist wanted lists of both the US and EU.
DIG Gondal highlighted the arrest as a breakthrough, and the CTD initiated a thorough investigation.
In related international news, the then US President Donald Trump confirmed in September 2019 that Hamza bin Laden, Osama’s son and presumed heir, was killed in a counter-terrorism operation.
US media sources, citing intelligence officials in late July and early August, reported that the younger Bin Laden’s death occurred within the last two years during a US-involved operation. Secretary of Defense Mark Esper also acknowledged the death last month, indicating he understood Bin Laden was dead.
The arrest comes in the broader context of ongoing efforts against Al-Qaeda leadership following the historical operation on May 2, 2011, when US Navy SEALs killed Osama bin Laden in Abbottabad, Pakistan.
The operation, named Neptune Spear, took less than 40 minutes. Osama Bin Laden had been the world’s most wanted terrorist due to his role in the September 11, 2001 attacks on New York’s Twin Towers.
