Karachi: The city administration in Karachi has finally awoken albeit after the Supreme Court of Pakistan ordered the removal of illegal billboards in the city which pose a great safety hazard for the citizens.
The city administration became active on Thursday and removed illegal billboards along the city’s main arteries Sharah-e-Faisal and Karsaz.
Experts as well as citizens of Karachi feel the crackdown should have been conducted much sooner, but those responsible ignored the threat illegal signboards posed to the citizens and gave precedence to earning from the illegally erected billboards. This becomes evident from the fact that 12 companies letting billboards are owned by KMC officials.
The crackdown began only after the Supreme Court of Pakistan termed billboards erected on footpaths as a violation of citizens rights and ordered their removal. The Supreme Court has also sought a report from the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) as well as from the Sindh Police on the illegal billboards on the 26th of August.
