A district and sessions court reserved its verdict on pleas by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, seeking to suspend their sentence in the iddat case.
Earlier this month, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) had instructed the district court to decide on the couple’s pleas within 10 days. The court also allowed one month to resolve the petition contesting the couple’s conviction.
The IHC had acted following multiple petitions by the former prime minister, which included a request for the district and sessions court to announce the reserved verdict and for the high court to expedite the hearing of their appeals.
Meanwhile, Bushra Bibi had requested a quick decision on her plea for sentence suspension in the sessions court.
The decision, which has been reserved, is set to be announced on June 27 at 3 PM.
The case began in January when Bushra’s ex-husband, Khawar Maneka, challenged their marriage, declaring their nikah fraudulent and claiming it was solemnized during her iddat period.
In February, a trial court convicted the couple and sentenced each to seven years in prison, imposing a fine of Rs500,000.
Following the conviction, Khan and Bushra filed several appeals, including those challenging their conviction and others seeking suspension of their sentences.
Judge Shahrukh Arjumand had initially reserved the verdict on their conviction on May 23. Subsequently, following expressions of no-confidence by Maneka, the IHC, at Judge Arjumand’s request, transferred the case to Additional District and Sessions Judge Muhammad Afzal Majuka.
