A local court in Islamabad granted a one-day physical remand of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Ali Amin Gandapur in connection with a terrorism and sedition case.
Gandapur was initially arrested on Thursday by the Dera Ismail Khan police following multiple cases registered against him by Islamabad and Punjab Police. However, on Saturday, he was handed over to the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) Police for the case registered at Golra Police Station in the federal capital.
During the court hearing on Sunday, the prosecutor provided details of the FIR against Gandapur, stating that the PTI leader discussed plans to attack Islamabad in an audio recording related to the case. The prosecutor claimed that Gandapur threatened to gather weapons to fight against the police and argued that the suspect could be sent on remand for 90 days, given the seriousness of the charges.
Gandapur’s lawyer, Babar Awan, countered the charges during his arguments. He pointed out that the FIR lacked essential information, such as the identity of the police officer who felt threatened by Gandapur’s speech. Awan also argued that the case should not be presented in the current court as a terrorism case. He requested the court to discharge Gandapur from the case and, if not, to send him on remand for only 24 hours to present him in an Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC).
After hearing both sides, the court granted a one-day physical remand of Gandapur and directed the police to present him in an ATC on Monday.
