Karachi: An accountability court in Karachi on Thursday extended the physical remand of former petroleum minister Dr Asim Hussain for seven more days, continuing his detention in the custody of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).
The former petroleum minister – a close aide of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Co-Chairperson Asif Ali Zardari – was arrested over allegations of corruption and facilitating terrorists at his private hospital in Karachi.
The PPP leader was taken into custody by security personnel on August 26 and was held by Rangers for 90 days during which he claimed being mistreated and made to give statements under duress, which includes admission that wanted criminals were given treatment on Dr. Asim’s orders at his hospital.
But last week, while Rangers officials insisted they have evidence against the accused, the Sindh police gave a clean chit to the former minister after his 14-day physical remand in police custody expired on Friday.
The anti-terrorism court (ATC) hearing the case ordered that Dr Asim Hussain be handed over to NAB, which had filed a plea seeking custody of the accused to investigate him in connection to other charges.
