A FOX News host has faced criticism for suggesting Donald Trump’s new sneakers could appeal to Black Americans, a statement that a Detroit rapper seems to support.
During a broadcast, Raymond Arroyo commented on Trump’s “gold” sneakers, priced at $400, controversially suggesting that Black Americans’ supposed love for sneakers would attract them to Trump’s side.
Arroyo stated, “This connects with Black America because they love sneakers. This is significant, especially in inner cities. Trump’s sneaker line makes them think, ‘This is cool.’ He’s reaching them beyond politics.”
These remarks led to widespread condemnation online, with many labelling them as racist and reinforcing harmful stereotypes. Critics emphasized that Black Americans are not a homogeneous group.
Despite the backlash, rapper Peezy expressed support for Trump’s sneakers, “Never Surrender,” and criticized Biden, indicating a desire to acquire a size 13 of the sold-out sneakers.
Peezy’s stance does not represent broader opinions but highlights individual preference for Trump and his merchandise.
Although Arroyo’s comments were deemed problematic, they also underscored that some Black Americans do support Trump and his products, challenging the notion of a uniform political allegiance.
Observers note that Trump’s ability to attract more African American votes may not hinge on these sneakers, despite FOX News’ implications.
Nonetheless, the Trump sneakers, released in a limited edition of 1,000 pairs, quickly sold out, indicating a demand for the merchandise.
