The government has summoned Netflix India’s content head due to significant controversy surrounding the ‘IC 814’ web series, which dramatizes the 1999 hijacking of an Indian Airlines flight.
The show, “Netflix IC-814,” portrays the exchange of three prisoners for the safety of Indian passengers held at Kandahar Airport in Afghanistan, exposing a major security lapse.
NDTV reports that the Union Information and Broadcasting Ministry’s summons follows social media accusations that the series changed the hijackers’ names to “Bhola” and “Shankar.”
Anubhav Sinha directed the series, inspired by ‘Flight Into Fear: The Captain’s Story’ by Devi Sharan and journalist Srinjoy Chowdhury.
The series recounts how Indian Airlines flight IC 814, flying from Kathmandu to Delhi with 180 people, encountered hijackers. It provides a detailed account, noting the release of 27 of 176 passengers in Dubai, where hijackers also killed one and injured several others. The crisis, lasting a week, concluded with the release of all passengers.
It also shows discussions among senior RAW and Ministry of External Affairs officials about who would take the blame for the security breakdown after the hijacking.
