At the Paris Games, a bout ended prematurely when Angela Carini, visibly distressed, retired just 46 seconds into her welterweight round of 16 match against Imane Khelif. Khelif dominated the bout and left Carini in tears after her clear victory.
The Paris Olympics have not been without controversy, especially in the boxing events. The participation of Imane Khelif from Algeria and Lin Yu-ting from Taiwan has sparked significant debate. Both were disqualified from the 2023 World Cup for having XY chromosomes, which are typically found in men, while women generally have XX chromosomes.
Khelif has been the subject of particular scrutiny, facing accusations of unfair competition, especially from Italian circles. After her quick victory over Carini, the Italian boxer was overwhelmed, exclaiming, “Mi ha fatto Massimo” (“It hurt me a lot”) and repeatedly stating, “It’s not fair.” Carini’s refusal to shake Khelif’s hand underscored the intense controversy.
The bout began with Khelif landing a powerful right hand that dislodged Carini’s helmet, prompting the Italian to quickly withdraw from the match and vent her frustrations to her team.
Meanwhile, Lin Yu-ting is set to compete against Uzbekistan’s Turdibekova on Friday. Despite testing for high testosterone levels, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has allowed her to compete.
Neither Khelif nor Yu-ting has identified as transgender or intersex.
Until last year, both athletes enjoyed successful careers without controversy. Khelif was a runner-up at the 2022 World Cup, and Yu-ting was a world champion in 2018 and 2022.
In Algeria, support for Khelif has grown despite the backlash, with notable figures like Ismael Bennacer speaking out in her defence.
As Khelif advances to the quarterfinals, the debates over her participation continue to stir significant discussion on social media, reflecting wider issues of gender and fairness in Olympic competition.
