The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) filed a contempt plea in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) against the suspension of the No Objection Certificate (NOC) for the Islamabad rally.
Khanzaada Hussain, Coordinator of Tehreek-e-Tahafuz-e-Aein, submitted the plea, challenging the cancellation of the NOC for the Tarnol Jalsa despite a court order permitting it. The petition lists several officials, including the Chief Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner, Inspector General, and Superintendent of Police of Tarnol, as respondents and calls on the court to initiate contempt proceedings against them.
The petition highlights that the Deputy Commissioner of Islamabad confirmed the issuance of the NOC for the PTI Islamabad rally on July 4. However, as the petitioner stated, the situation escalated when PTI leader Amir Mughal, while leading officials to the rally site, was arrested outside the DC Office.
The plea details PTI learned about the NOC’s cancellation through a tweet from Islamabad Police. Subsequently, the Deputy Commissioner sent a letter to the petitioner confirming the NOC’s cancellation.
The revocation occurred shortly after the Islamabad Chief Commissioner suspended the NOC during a meeting, citing security concerns raised by agencies about the rally’s potential risks. This decision came despite the district administration’s initial approval for PTI to hold a public gathering on July 6 near Tarnol Chowk.
Following the issuance of the NOC, the Islamabad High Court, under Justice Babar Sattar, disposed of the application regarding the meeting’s permission, suggesting legal backing for the event before the abrupt cancellation.
