US Congressman Brad Sherman has written a letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken, expressing concerns regarding human rights and democracy in Pakistan.
In his letter, Sherman acknowledged US support for Pakistan in times of need and urged Blinken to prioritize human rights, as it aligns with US national interests.
Sherman recently had a phone conversation with former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan. He asked Blinken to reaffirm the US’s stance that the Pakistani government should respect citizens’ rights to speak, organize, and demonstrate peacefully. The congressman emphasized the importance of a democratic and prosperous Pakistan where citizens can engage in free and open political dialogue.
The letter also highlighted alarming incidents from the past year, such as the alleged torture and sexual abuse of political figures like former PM Khan’s Chief of Staff Shahbaz Gill and journalist Jameel Farooqui. While both were eventually released, the impact of their detention and treatment continues to resonate.
Human Rights Watch (HRW) called for an urgent investigation into Gill’s complaints, citing numerous credible allegations of torture and ill-treatment of political opponents in Pakistan during previous governments. HRW also questioned the sedition charges against Gill.
Sherman further noted the numerous cases filed against the PTI chief, the use of force against his supporters, the detention of protesters under sweeping counter-terrorism laws, and the shrinking space for free speech. Additionally, the congressman pointed out efforts to delay elections in two key provinces as another sign of “skirting” democratic processes. He urged Pakistan to respect the Supreme Court ruling that elections should proceed on time.
In his letter, Sherman requested Blinken to form a panel of law experts to review the issue of the election delay verdict by the top court, as the government believes the full court should hear the matter. The congressman emphasized the importance of the US-Pakistani relationship, which should reflect US priorities regarding democracy, human rights, and the rule of law in Pakistan.
