Pakistan’s Former cricketers Shoaib Malik and Ramiz Raja are raising alarms over the dip in the performance of fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi in the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023.
Injury Affecting Pace
During the match against Sri Lanka, commentator and ex-captain Ramiz Raja pointed out, “Shaheen is bowling in pain due to an injured finger.” Shoaib Malik mirrored this observation in his conversation with a sports channel. He emphasized Shaheen’s reduced pace, particularly with the crucial India match approaching. “It’s alarming that Shaheen isn’t reaching speeds of 140kph, especially when his opening deliveries used to touch 145kph. His pace post-injury has seen a notable decline,” Malik remarked.
Crucial Role in Team’s Strategy
Malik highlighted Afridi’s crucial role in the squad: “His knack for early wickets, especially against formidable teams, is invaluable for Pakistan.” He urged Afridi to work closely with the team’s physio and trainer to rectify the issue. “Given the upcoming key clashes against teams like Australia, India, and South Africa, the management must address this concern,” Malik added.
Recent Performances Under Scrutiny
Shaheen’s recent figures reflect the concerns. Against Sri Lanka, he yielded 66 runs in nine overs, managing a single scalp. His performance against the Netherlands also mirrored a similar trend, with stats of 1-37 in seven overs. Nevertheless, Pakistan maintained their stellar form, clinching a momentous victory against Sri Lanka in the World Cup’s eighth fixture.
