The NBA is preparing to introduce a fresh wave of talent. The 2024 NBA Draft, an eagerly awaited event on the basketball calendar, will start just a few hours after the NBA Finals conclude.
The NBA Draft, initiated in 1947, has occurred annually. This year introduces a new format, spanning two nights on June 26 and 27. The first round takes place at the Barclays Center on the first night, while the second round moves to ESPN’s Seaport District Studios in New York the following night.
The draft order was finalized following the NBA Draft Lottery. Fourteen teams that did not make the playoffs entered the lottery, which determined the first four picks. Subsequent selections follow in reverse order of the teams’ regular-season records.
The Atlanta Hawks secured the first overall pick. The Washington Wizards, Houston Rockets, and San Antonio Spurs follow them. Picks 15 through 30 conclude the first round, and picks 31 through 58* complete the second round, also based on regular-season standings.
The NBA draft comprises only two rounds due to a 1989 agreement with the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA). This arrangement allows undrafted players more opportunities to sign with any team.
Since 2016, NCAA players can enter the draft and attend the combine multiple times. They retain eligibility if they withdraw within 10 days after the mid-May combine.
While most NBA draftees are college players, international players like Giannis Antetokounmpo and Luka Doncic have also been impacted significantly.
Speculations suggest Zacharie Risacher might be the Hawks’ top pick. Alex Sarr is predicted to go to the Wizards.
The draft’s first round starts on June 26 at 20:00 ET, with coverage beginning at 19:30 ET. The second round kicks off at 16:00 ET the next day.
