Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa expressed strong concerns over the ease of obtaining weapon licenses in Pakistan. He questioned the interior ministry, home departments, and law enforcers about the widespread availability of weapons.
The Chief Justice emphasized that weapons and drugs have significantly harmed the nation. He pointed out the rarity of civilians carrying Kalashnikovs in other parts of the world. CJP Isa revealed he was even offered a Kalashnikov license.
His remarks came during a bail plea hearing for a theft case. The petitioner, Kashif, was accused of stealing weapons during a home robbery. CJP Isa asked for details on issuing prohibited weapon licenses nationwide.
The Supreme Court notified various legal and enforcement authorities, seeking responses. CJP criticized the police for not checking the license of the robbery victim, who lost two Kalashnikovs and other valuables. He questioned the petitioner about the origin of the Kalashnikov.
He hinted at possible actions against the IG for lax license distribution and proposed returning all Kalashnikovs and their licenses to the interior secretary. CJP also addressed the issue of guards in Islamabad, schools, and markets carrying Kalashnikovs without police intervention. He criticized the use of such weapons for intimidation and questioned the ability to distinguish between terrorists and others with Kalashnikovs.
