Chris Hemsworth, the Australian actor famous for portraying Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has launched a deeply personal project. The documentary “A Journey to Remember” is now streaming on Disney+. The film explores Hemsworth’s genetic predisposition for Alzheimer’s disease and his relationship with his father.
The actor learned he carries the APOE4 gene, which significantly increases his risk of developing Alzheimer’s later in life. His father also lives with the disease. This shared experience inspired the 52-minute documentary, produced in collaboration with National Geographic.
The documentary follows Hemsworth and his father on a trip to significant locations from their past. The journey aims to strengthen social connections and preserve memories. This project represents one of the most personal endeavours in Hemsworth’s career, moving beyond his iconic superhero roles.

Hemsworth first revealed his genetic risk in late 2022. The announcement sparked speculation about a possible acting retirement, which he later clarified. In the film’s trailer, he expresses a proactive mindset: “I want to do everything I can to help. It turns out this experience might help you fight the disease.”
The actor emphasises the importance of family and time. He stated that returning to his roots felt crucial at this life stage. “The result was a deeper, more moving journey,” Hemsworth said. “I just want to spend more time with him.”
The documentary serves a dual purpose. It provides an intimate family portrait while raising broader public awareness about Alzheimer’s disease. Hemsworth uses his platform to highlight the emotional and genetic aspects of the condition.
