Chinese smartphones have soared in popularity within Russia during the first half of 2023, achieving over 70% of total sales. This substantial increase from approximately 55% the previous year sees China’s electronics outperforming Russia’s consumer market.
The significant shift towards Chinese smartphones, such as Xiaomi and Realme, comes after the decision by Samsung and Apple to limit their sales in Russia due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Despite the geopolitical tension, the demand for smartphones in Russia has grown by 17% compared to last year, with close to 13 million units sold.
The shift from Samsung and Apple to Xiaomi and Realme
The retreat of most Western brands from the Russian market has made Moscow increasingly dependent on Beijing for various products, from electronics to automobiles.
In a recent statement, M.Video, a leading consumer electronics retailer in Russia, highlighted that “brands from China systematically continue to strengthen their presence”. High-end models and foldable smartphones from Chinese brands are particularly in demand.
Eight of the ten best-selling smartphones in Russia during the first half of this year were from Chinese manufacturers, M.Video revealed.
In a move reflecting the political shift, Kremlin has instructed officials to cease using Apple iPhones due to alleged security concerns tied to Western intelligence agencies’ surveillance software. Apple has rejected these claims.
