China aims to restore healthy and sustainable commercial relations with the United States, Commerce Minister Wang Wentao stated on July 18, 2025.

Mento urged the US to act responsibly as a major power during a press conference in Beijing. Wang highlighted China’s trade resilience in the face of complex external challenges and outlined plans to expand both imports and exports in the upcoming five-year plan.

Wang explained that the fluctuations in China-US trade serve as a lesson about the interdependence of both nations. He noted that a forced decoupling and severing of supply chains is impractical, as some trade between the two countries is difficult to replace, at least in the short term. Despite facing challenges, he emphasised that both nations remain essential economic partners and can resolve tensions through equitable dialogue.

Earlier this year, the US imposed tariffs exceeding 100% on Chinese products under President Donald Trump, though some of these tariffs were partially lifted in a truce reached in May. China has until August 12 to finalise a deal to avoid the reinstatement of the tariffs. Wang pointed out that the current tariff level on Chinese goods in the US is 53.6%, which he described as “still high.”

Wang reaffirmed: “There are no winners in a trade war. China does not want a trade war, but it is not afraid of one.” He emphasised that major countries must shoulder responsibilities and protect national interests. Wang’s remarks signal China’s push for balanced trade amid ongoing tensions. This approach could stabilise relations if both sides engage constructively.
