In the wake of repeated public desecration of the Quran, China has voiced its strong disapproval, supporting an urgent debate at the Nations Human Rights Council.
Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, Wang Wenbin condemned these acts during his regular press briefing on Thursday.
Wang stressed the need for mutual respect, inclusiveness, and shared understanding between civilizations. He firmly denounced any form of Islamophobia and argued against the misuse of ‘freedom of speech’ as a pretext for inflaming conflicts and antagonism between different cultures and religions. He underscored that all religious beliefs and sentiments must be accorded due respect.
China’s response aligns with its commitment to fostering global civilization through initiatives promoting equality, mutual learning, dialogue, and inclusiveness among diverse cultures. Wang affirmed China’s commitment to work with the international community in building a shared future for humanity while safeguarding the world’s diverse civilizations.
UN Human Rights Council Resolution
The recent desecration of the Holy Quran has triggered an urgent debate at the 53rd UN Human Rights Council session, taking place from July 11 to 12. The Council passed a draft resolution by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, with 28 votes in favour, 12 against, and 7 abstentions.
The resolution sternly criticizes the recent premeditated acts of public desecration of the Holy Quran. It has set the stage for a topical discussion and an interactive dialogue in the 54th and 55th sessions of the UN Human Rights Council. Furthermore, it calls upon the High Commissioner to present an oral update on the root causes of religious hatred. These measures indicate a firm stance against religious intolerance and a step towards fostering global harmony.
