The fatal shooting of conservative influencer Charlie Kirk sparked a strong reaction from US Republicans. Kirk, 31, a Trump supporter known for his bold views, leaders across parties mourned him. As news of the Charlie Kirk shooting spread, some online comments mocking or celebrating his death led to a fierce Republican backlash.

According to Reuters, at least 15 people, including journalists and teachers, have fired or suspended for online posts about Kirk’s death. A new website, “Expose Charlie’s Murderers,” lists 41 names accused of supporting violence online. Some comments celebrated Kirk’s death, while others simply noted his past gun control stance. Republicans like Laura Loomer warned critics of ruined careers. Lawmaker Clay Higgins called for lifetime social media bans. Deputy Secretary Christopher Landau directed consular action against those praising the killing related to the Charlie Kirk shooting incident.

Some Republicans now demanding respect for Kirk have faced criticism for past actions. When Paul Pelosi was attacked in 2022, Loomer falsely called it a “booty call gone wrong.” Kirk himself jokingly suggested bailing out Pelosi’s attacker. These remarks contrast with the current push to silence Kirk’s critics. This highlights selective outrage during incidents like the Charlie Kirk shooting. Neither Loomer nor Higgins responded to requests for comment.

🚨 NOW: Thousands of patriots at a Charlie Kirk vigil have broken out in a “CHARLIE! CHARLIE!” chant in Seaford, New York.

He will be remembered by tens of millions. Countless Americans will now speak up and get more involved than ever. 🇺🇸

The “Expose Charlie’s Murderers” website, hosted by Squarespace, claims to process over 20,000 submissions targeting Kirk’s critics. Some listed individuals faced workplace harassment, with callers demanding their firing. One person, speaking anonymously to Reuters, condemned Kirk’s murder. However, they noted the irony of his death by gunfire, given his pro-gun views, especially in light of the Charlie Kirk shooting scenario. The site’s ownership and methods remain unclear, as Squarespace did not respond to inquiries.

The backlash shows how political speech online can lead to real-world consequences. Jay Childers, a communications professor, says efforts to control dissent are not new. However, they are amplified by the internet. The debate about incidents like the Charlie Kirk shooting raises questions about free speech. It also questions accountability and the ethics of targeting critics during a tragedy.
