A sharp increase in flour prices over the past week has caused serious concern among residents of Chaman, with low-income households bearing the brunt of the surge.
Market sources said the price of a 100-kilogram bag of flour has risen by Rs2,500 within a single week. Traders attributed the sudden spike to a disruption in flour supplies from Punjab, which has sharply reduced availability in the border district.
According to the local market association, the suspension of flour transportation from Punjab has triggered acute shortages. As a result, prices have climbed rapidly across the area. In several localities, the cost of a 50-kilogram bag has increased by Rs1,000 to Rs1,200 over the past seven days.

Residents said the district administration has failed to contain the price spiral. Many families reported that they can no longer afford basic staples, as the price of a 50-kilogram bag has risen to Rs6,300, up from Rs5,000 last week.
The sharp rise has intensified fears over food security in a region already facing economic hardship. Citizens and traders are now urging the government to intervene immediately, restore supply lines, and enforce effective price controls to protect vulnerable consumers.
