Carl Weathers, celebrated for his portrayal of Apollo Creed in the Rocky films alongside Sylvester Stallone, has died at age 76, his manager, Matt Luber, confirmed to Variety.
His illustrious career included significant roles in “Predator” (1987) and “Happy Gilmore,” earning a Primetime Emmy nomination for “The Mandalorian.” Weathers also voiced Combat Carl in “Toy Story 4” and appeared as himself in “Arrested Development,” with roles in “Street Justice,” “The Shield,” and more. His work extended to “Little Nicky” and “Eight Crazy Nights,” collaborating with Adam Sandler.
Born in New Orleans on January 14, 1948, Weathers excelled in sports, leading to a victory in the 1969 Pasadena Bowl with San Diego State University. Despite an early focus on theatre arts, he joined the Oakland Raiders in 1970, playing two NFL seasons as a linebacker.
Transitioning to acting, Weathers appeared in “Bucktown,” “Friday Foster,” and series such as “Good Times” and “Starsky and Hutch.” His “Predator” role placed him alongside future governors Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jesse Ventura. Weathers also entertained on “Saturday Night Live,” humorously proposing a political run.
Stallone’s request to use Apollo Creed footage in Rocky Balboa was initially declined by Weathers, who sought an active role. However, they reconciled, incorporating Weathers’ likeness in the Creed series. Later, Weathers contributed to TV procedurals and directed episodes, notably in “The Mandalorian.”
Survived by his ex-wife, Mary Ann, and two sons, Weathers’s legacy in film and television endures, significantly impacting his industry and fans globally.
