In a recent press conference, Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar stated that the expectation of uniform policies in a liberal democracy and parliamentary system is unrealistic. He emphasized that policy consistency is generally found in one-party governments that hold power for extended periods. Under liberal democracies, policies are crafted considering the current economic and political challenges, and governments are judged based on their decisions and capacities by the citizens, who then decide whether or not to reinstate them.
Regarding the schedule for the upcoming general elections, Mr. Kakar clarified that announcing a date is not within the purview of the interim government and doing so would be considered unlawful. He urged journalists to refrain from encouraging potential illegal actions through their queries.
Tackling Cross-Border Smuggling and Other Issues
Following a recent meeting addressing issues like cross-border smuggling, hoarding, and power theft, Mr. Kakar affirmed a zero-tolerance stance against individuals engaged in smuggling, pledging that law enforcement would proceed accordingly. The meeting also encompassed discussions on the Afghan Transit Trade agreement and the reopening of the Torkham border, with assurances that trade resumption would not reignite smuggling.
Regarding the repeated hike in petroleum product prices during his tenure, Mr. Kakar attributed it to global factors outside of domestic control. He also hinted at future announcements concerning easy payment plans for electricity consumers using up to 200 units.
When questioned about the political affiliations of Fawad Hasan Fawad and Ahad Cheema, who recently joined the caretaker setup, the Prime Minister described them as competent individuals primarily recognized for their roles as former civil servants, with no known ties to any political party.
