Former NFL quarterback Cam Newton was involved in a confrontation that escalated into a physical altercation during a 7-on-7 football tournament in Atlanta over the weekend.
The incident, captured on video and shared widely on social media platforms on Sunday afternoon, occurred at the exclusive “We Ball Sports” 7v7 event.
The footage reveals Newton engaged in a scuffle with multiple individuals associated with TopShelf Performance, a team participating in the tournament. The conflict initially erupted under a tent, with several men pushing Newton, who represented his “C1N” team at the same event. The altercation then progressed to a secluded area obscured by trees, where the confrontation intensified.
Throughout the approximately 22-second video clip shared on X, Newton managed to maintain control, at one point securing one of the assailants in a headlock while simultaneously defending against attacks from at least two others. At a different juncture, an individual wearing a white shirt is seen attempting a forceful punch. However, the target of the blow—whether Newton or another participant—is not determined.
Security personnel, along with a uniformed police officer, eventually intervened, dispersing the crowd and restoring order.
The precise cause of the brawl remains unconfirmed. Still, speculation suggests it could be linked to an Instagram post by Newton and a comment from TopShelf Performance’s general manager, Steph Brown, as reported by Fox News.
TopShelf Performance, recognized nationally for its 18U 7-on-7 football program and training services for receivers at various levels, alongside Newton, We Ball Sports, and local law enforcement, has not officially addressed the incident.
Newton, renowned for his 11-season tenure in the NFL, was the first overall pick by the Panthers in 2011, spending most of his career with Carolina. His tenure included a season with the New England Patriots in 2020.
