Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark has been honoured as the WNBA Rookie of the Month for May, marking her first accolade in the professional basketball league.
Since her debut, Clark has greatly increased the WNBA’s visibility with her on-court performances. In her first nine games, Clark has averaged 17.6 points and 6.6 assists over 33 minutes per game. Her standout performance was on May 28 against the Los Angeles Sparks, scoring 30 points.
This month, Clark tied with Diana Taurasi for most three-pointers in the league, totalling 24. She also ranked second in assists and free throws made.
Clark joins Candace Parker and Sabrina Ionescu as the only rookies to surpass 100 points, 30 rebounds, and 30 assists in their first six games. She is also the third Indiana Fever player to receive Rookie of the Month honours, following Aliyah Boston and Natalie Achonwa.
Despite her success, Clark leads the league in turnovers, averaging 5.4 per game. This high number reflects her significant role in the Fever’s strategy. The award follows a recent incident involving Chicago Sky guard Chennedy Carter, leading to controversy.
However, Clark’s performance in scoring, assists, steals, and free-throw accuracy emphasizes her deserving of the award.
Clark highlights the WNBA’s competitive new class, including Angel Reese of the Chicago Sky and Cameron Brink of the Los Angeles Sparks. Reese excels in rebounds, while Brink leads in blocks.
Clark is expected to enhance her skills further as she continues in the WNBA. Fans can watch her next game against the Washington Mystics on Friday at 7:30 p.m. ET, broadcast on ION.
