Indian cricket’s leading pace bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, faced the International Cricket Council (ICC) reprimand. The charge was for “inappropriate physical contact” with England’s Ollie Pope during India’s recent Test match.
The incident occurred in England’s second innings. As stated by the ICC, Bumrah, completing his follow-through, obstructed Pope’s path, causing physical contact. Despite admitting the offence and accepting the sanction, Bumrah received one demerit point on his disciplinary record.
This breach falls under the ICC’s code for “inappropriate physical contact.” Penalties range from an official reprimand to a 50% match fee fine and possible demerit points. Bumrah, notable for his skill in all formats, took six wickets in the match.
India, led by Rohit Sharma, suffered a rare home defeat, surprising many. England’s aggressive “Bazball” approach under Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes has led to significant success in recent Tests.
