Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah found himself at the centre of controversy during the first day of the Kolkata Test against South Africa. The premier pacer was clearly heard on the stump microphone, making remarks about Proteas captain Temba Bavuma’s physical stature.

The incident occurred during the 13th over when Bumrah believed he had trapped Bavuma leg-before-wicket. After the umpire rejected his appeal, the bowler commented to wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant in Hindi, questioning whether they should request a review while referencing Bavuma’s height.

The South African captain managed only three runs from eleven deliveries during his time at the crease. His innings concluded when Kuldeep Yadav claimed his wicket, with Dhruv Jurel completing the catch at leg slip position.

It's a shocker from Bumrah. I never expected a player of his reputation to utter such words for any player. Body shaming is unacceptable and shouldn't be ignored. pic.twitter.com/DMFJ0mfwLB

Bavuma’s dismissal left the visiting team struggling at 71-3 during the 16th over. The early departure increases pressure on the skipper to deliver a substantial performance during South Africa’s second innings, particularly following his recent return from injury.

South Africa’s Batting Collapse After Strong Start

South African openers had established a promising foundation after winning the toss and electing to bat first. Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickleton demonstrated aggressive intent, accumulating 57 runs within the initial ten overs of the match.

Jasprit Bumrah dramatically shifted the match’s momentum by dismissing both openers in quick succession. His bowling breakthrough initiated a collapse that saw the entire Proteas lineup dismissed for 159 runs during the 55th over.

Should ICC ban Bumrah for these disgusting and derogatory remarks? 🚨

Despite the controversy surrounding his comments using a stump microphone, Bumrah delivered an exceptional bowling performance. The pace bowler claimed five wickets while conceding only 27 runs across his 14-over spell.

His figures of 5-27 represent one of his most impressive Test match performances, demonstrating his world-class bowling capabilities. However, this achievement has become somewhat overshadowed by the inappropriate remarks captured during play.
