Bronny James has faced intense scrutiny early in his professional career, much of which analysts attribute to the Lakers’ management.
The Los Angeles Lakers rookie endured criticism following two subpar performances in the NBA Summer League. Analysts suggest that the Lakers’ management may have inadvertently intensified this scrutiny.
Bronny, the elder son of NBA icon LeBron James, has been under the microscope since high school, spurred by the prospect of him playing alongside his father in the NBA. His journey faced further challenges following a cardiac arrest in July 2023 while playing for the USC Trojans, leading to heightened scrutiny over his collegiate performance and early professional outings.
Seth Partnow, an analyst for The Athletic, critiqued the Lakers’ board for how they managed Bronny’s entry into professional basketball, particularly during the 2024 NBA Draft. Speaking on the Lowe Post podcast, Partnow remarked, “I think they have done him a tremendous disservice… They’ve really put a target on the poor kid’s back,” pointing to the excessive attention from the Lakers, led by Jeanie Buss.
Despite being a late second-round pick, Bronny received extensive media coverage comparable to top draft selections. His father’s comments about playing together and actions by his agent, Rich Paul, only magnified the expectations.
Bronny struggled to make a significant impact in his initial Summer League games, failing to score over 10 points. However, his performance has been on an upswing, culminating in a 29-point game against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Despite the surrounding hype, Zach Lowe, another respected analyst, emphasized the need to view Bronny as a developing player rather than a finished product. Lowe wanted to shift the focus away from the hype, stating, “It’s an uncomfortable topic… We need to let him develop outside of the spotlight.”
As Bronny prepares for the upcoming 2024-2025 NBA season, the challenge remains whether he can meet the high expectations set not just by his lineage but also by the media and public attention that has followed him from an early age.
