A global shockwave was triggered by the alleged gang rape of a 28-year-old Brazilian vlogger in Dumka, Jharkhand, India. This incident occurred during her biking journey with her partner on a Friday night, with the couple stopping in Dumka to camp overnight.
Dumka’s Superintendent of Police, Pitamber Singh Kherwar, disclosed that the couple sought assistance from a patrol vehicle around midnight, detailing a brutal assault. Kherwar noted the initial communication challenges due to language barriers, leading to their transfer to a health centre where the rape was confirmed.
The victims shared their ordeal through a social media video, stating, “Seven men raped me, and we were beaten and robbed… We are in the hospital with the police; it happened tonight in India.”
Authorities have apprehended four suspects, yet the incident has sparked widespread condemnation and concern on social media.
Criticism also emerged regarding the Indian media’s focus on the lavish pre-wedding festivities of Mukesh Ambani’s son, Anant, contrasting with the underreporting of the assault. The celebration, attended by global celebrities like Bill Gates and Rihanna, highlighted the theme ‘Atithi Devo Bhava,’ emphasizing guest honour, as Mukesh Ambani reiterated during the event.
The incident has intensified discussions on women’s safety in India, emphasizing the need for stringent security measures for both locals and visitors. It also prompted reflections on India’s sexual violence issues without resorting to racism, emphasizing education on respect and behaviour towards women.
