Brazil announced its new export agreements with Pakistan and the Philippines. Brazilian Agriculture Ministry confirmed that Pakistan approved the import of Brazilian live cattle, cow embryos, and semen.
This decision broadens Brazil’s livestock export market. Additionally, Brazil received authorization to export young tilapia fish to the Philippines, further expanding its aquaculture trade.
Trade Statistics and Policy Amendments
Brazil’s cattle exports significantly increased in 2023, reaching nearly $489 million, a 154% jump from 2022. Pakistan’s imports from Brazil, mainly fibres and textiles, totalled $298 million last year. Meanwhile, the Philippines imported $918 million of goods from Brazil, with meat proteins constituting the majority. Brazil’s total exports in 2023 amounted to almost $340 billion, with China being the largest market, purchasing around $106 billion of products.
In April last year, the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) approved amendments to the Import Policy Order-2022. These changes align with the World Organization of Animal Health’s (WOAH) revised conditions for cattle trade.
In September 2023, the UAE implemented stricter rules for importing meat from Pakistan following reports of substandard shipments. The UAE now requires fresh or chilled meat from Pakistan to be vacuum-packed or modified-atmosphere packed with a specified shelf life. This restriction applies to all other packaged fresh or chilled meat imported from Pakistan by sea.
